Leatrice Elizabeth Sager

December 2, 1932 - April 12, 2022

Denison Leatrice Sager, 89, died at her home in Denison on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Leatrice was born the daughter of James Monroe and Barnie (Greene) Bond on December 2, 1932 in Sadler, Texas. She graduated from Denison Senior High School in 1950 and attended Grayson County College. Lee was married to Bill M. Sager on December 28, 1971, he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker, a volunteer for the Denison Concert Association, member and organizer for Pink Ladies TMC for 13 years, she was instrumental in raising funds to cover Waterloo Pool, of the Methodist faith and loved her family. The family would like to share with you what Lee, as a mother, has taught her children over the years. Chocolate cake for breakfast is good. Maybe not worth the diabetes now, but it was good. She tried to teach us about the bounties of the earth—that nothing tasted so good as a fresh picked peach or plum right off the tree. What I learned was that fresh peaches and plums most often came with worms. Canned stuff is good. She taught us about laughter and about the pure joy of laughing at yourself. And when you do that everyone laughs with you. I have never laughed as hard as we did the day, I was washing green paint out of her hair and mouth so we could go to the hospital to tend to her broken shoulder. She taught us about community by being involved in everything – PTA, scouts, Pink ladies, caregiver groups, the Concert Association. And, with effort, you can drag the community into just about everything! She helped cover the pool at Waterloo and bring the first rock concert to Eisenhower auditorium. She taught us about courage in how she lived her life. Barely 18 years old and still in high school, she married and moved far away to the ends of the earth – away from everything she’d known and loved. Las Vegas was the ends of the earth then! Many years later, at an age most people would never even dream such a thing, she finished her education and continued on in college. She taught us about family and how important it is to care for your loved ones. She was always taking care of someone – her parents, her husband for so very many years and her sister. She has always taken care of her children and now sometimes it’s our turn. You take care of your family, then you take care of them again, then, they get the second knee replaced and you take care of them again. And it is an honor, blessing and a joy to do so. Grandfather used to say there wasn’t a child, dog or person of color that didn’t love Lee. He was right. Lee is survived by her son, Larry Kostyniak and his wife, Gretchen of Arlington, TX; daughter, Deena White of Denison; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Moore Funeral Home. Private graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Cedarlawn Memorial Park.
